August 01, 2013 at 1:10 PM Drugmaker Merck will close its manufacturing facility in Kenilworth and lay off 113 employees there, a company official confirmed today.

The move will take effect by October.

Merck announced the pending closure two years ago, when it began a company-wide reshuffling following its merger with Schering-Plough, said Lainie Keller, a spokeswoman for Merck.

The affected workers also received notice of the layoffs, which are sent 60 days ahead of time, as required under state law.

Whitehouse Station-based Merck will transfer those manufacturing operations primarily to its Cleveland, Tenn., location.

“Since we merged with Schering-Plough, this has been part of our operations to consolidate manufacturing around the world,” Keller said.

The Kenilworth campus also has a large research operation, which will continue to operate. “It will evolve into an important research facility,” Keller said.

Merck owns the sprawling campus, which had been Schering’s world headquarters. Keller said the company is exploring potential uses for the manufacturing building, talking with potential buyers and local officials.
